How do you improve your RQ?

- If leaders want to increase their own RQ, they must first embrace the reality that there is a deficit that exists within them, as well as in the people around them. The journey of growth in this arena starts by identifying our own deficits and blind spots, and not only focusing on the deficits of others, which is our tendency. Jesus actually talks about this when he says we tend to focus on the speck in someone else’s eye without looking at the log in our own.
- We have to identify the often, unobvious ways that we remain self-centered, and the subtle ways that we stifle the flow of potentially significant conversations. We have to pay attention to how people perceive our capacity to listen and be present with them because even if we think we’re good listeners and fully present, that may not be what others around us experience in their interactions with us. If we choose to go on this journey, our levels of self-awareness and social awareness will increase, resulting in improvement in our RQ.
- And then of course in my book I’ve identified the 6 core pathways toward increasing a leader’s RQ, which include learning the different roles we can play in relationships and understanding different communication styles that can increase our RQ.
